The Cultural Facilities Fund of the Massachusetts Cultural Council awarded the New Bedford Port Society $440,000 for efforts to restore and provide accessibility to the historic
Mariners Home which will ultimately be developed into a Fishing Heritage Center. The restoration project estimated at $2.1 million is a collaboration between the New Bedford Port Society, the Waterfront Historic Area League and the Working Waterfront Festival. WHALE is assisting with project management including all funding applications, historic tax credits, the Capital Campaign and grant administration. The project was also recently awarded $100,000 of CDBG funds from the City of New Bedford. The project hopes to break ground on the construction early in 2015.
