Speaking at WHALE’s Annual Meeting, New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell announced that the City will award a grant of $250,000 for the renovations of the John Howland House at 38 South Sixth Street. In September 2012, WHALE signed an Option to Purchase agreement with The Resource Inc., a Cape Cod-based nonprofit community development corporation. TRI plans to renovate this significant 1834 whaling captain’s house as 7 apartments, according to WHALE’s plans. TRI is working to secure the rest of the funding sufficient to complete the renovations. WHALE purchased the house a few years ago to save; the house had been gutted by fire and the previous owner sought to demolish it. Completing this project is one of WHALE’s key goals.
